What is a Boma Firepit?
Boma (pronounced BOH-mah)
A Boma Firepit is a communal gathering space centred around an open fire. It draws on the traditional “boma” concept from East and Southern Africa — originally a circular enclosure used for protection, social gathering and storytelling. Today, the Boma Firepit at KVBR is designed for warmth, evening conversation, bushland ambience and late-night celebration under the stars.
The Story of
Our Boma
The inspiration for our firepit began far from Kangaroo Valley. The owner of the retreat was married on a three-day, two-night festival wedding while on safari in Africa. His favourite part of the celebration was sitting late into the night in the boma, surrounded by firelight, sharing stories with family and friends as the night gave way to sunrise.
When he returned to Australia, he wanted to capture that same spirit of intimacy, warmth, and connection for couples celebrating at Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat. Today, our Boma Firepit is where weddings linger long after the music fades — a place to laugh, reflect, and create memories beneath the stars.
